The Firearm Safety Program, Explained

What the law requires, and how our courses meet it.

What Is SB25-003?

Colorado Senate Bill 25-003 established the Firearm Safety Program, a statewide requirement that anyone purchasing a specified semi-automatic firearm in Colorado first complete an approved safety course — unless they qualify for a listed exemption, such as holding a current Concealed Handgun Permit or a Colorado Hunter Education card.

The law is designed to make sure every new firearm owner in Colorado has hands-on instruction in safe handling, safe storage, and their legal responsibilities before they ever bring a gun home.

What the Law Requires

State-Approved Curriculum

Courses must be taught by an instructor certified under Colorado's Firearm Safety Program and cover the exact topics SB25-003 mandates.

Safe Handling & Storage

Live instruction in safe carry, loading and unloading, and secure storage practices — not just a video or an online quiz.

Legal Responsibilities

Students must understand Colorado's laws around ownership, transport, and use of force before completing the course.

Proof of Completion

Graduates receive documentation confirming completion, which satisfies the purchase requirement at licensed Colorado dealers.
